To the Power of Ten

It must be the end of the summer term, big smiles, sun shining and free beers

here and there at it even seems like people have discovered ice for cooling

bottles. It is of course the season of degree shows. I started off with the second

of the Power of Ten nights at the LCC on Elephant and Castle.

I say the second as the first show of the LCC series was mid May for the

foundation students, but there time will come. Last night saw the Degree shows

for Photography and Book Arts both very interesting with some awesome

imagery from photography and great craftsmanship from Book Arts, I just

wish there were more people on the course then the show could be twice as

big.

What I really love about the LCC shows is the collaboration between pathways

and courses and I think that has been shown in full effect this year with the

Triangle Space situated just outside the main entrance basking in the sun and

glory of the Elephant and Castle Roundabout. There the students have situated

Three large ship containers each painted up and with different workshops

happening in each. Earlier in the term they have had screenprinting and letterpress

workshops and last night included a photography studio doing portraiture, a book

shop and a live band followed by DJ.

Truely Powerful, check out dates at Power of Ten the Photography and Book

Arts show runs until the 9th with the Graphics Degree show starting on the

25th June.

Pick me Up // A while back

A while ago when it was still raining more than sunning Myself and Mikey (flatmate)
ventured out to Somerset House to the Print show Pick Me Up. Showcasing a majority
of print based designers and illustrators working in and around London and Southern
UK with exhibitions and workshops. A busy day and fun had by all. Here are some photos
I got that I was particuarly interested and inspired by. I would also like to point out my
mate Oschon who worked throughout for the Print Club doing Screenprint workshops
and assisting printers. For me the most active area of the show.

Street Art Brazillian Style

Favela Street artists are duo Jeroen Koolhaas and Dre Urhahn under

the working name of Haas&Hahn. After a trip to Rio and Sao Paolo

they completed a film for MTV on Hip Hop. Moving back they have

taken it upon themselves to brighten up the not so bright areas of a

magnificently colourful country by producing Huge murals throughout

the Favelas of Brazil. Some seriously large scale talent making a

difference with paint and colour. Check this out Favela Painting

I've been traveling back home quite a bit and when your visiting a place more
often you obviously notice things more and more.

So I have a keen eye for my photography at the minute as well as a slight
obsession on buying bits for bikes so it didn't take me long to notice Love Your
Bike Portsmouth a day of cycling extravaganzas down in my hometown out of
Southsea Skate Park and run by the guys at I Love Dust.

Anyway I really got into searching for bits and pieces for the day and found the
Strong Island site dedicated to keeping you up to date with whats happening
down in Portsmouth and Southsea. A great design approach I really enjoy their
posts with some sweet photography and I am now a regular reader.

Oh yeah and mentioning the photography... Check out their associate site
Forever Circling with some awesome imagery and a really sweet simple form
letting the content take control.

A mean 230 ish quid will get you a rather lovely large format polaroid

in scarf format in silk medium. A little bit out of my price bracket but

if your rolling out of recession and into the money I'd definitely get one.

Magazine. The Scarfs themselves a product of designer Philippe Roucou

in collaboration with M.Cherie who I am having real trouble finding

anything else about... oh well.

Nokta // Onur Senturk

Don Hertzfeldt // Rejected Adverts

Be aware. This could upset or offend or may just make you question why?

"In the spring of 1999, the Family Learning Channel commissioned

animator Don Hertzfeldt to produce promotional segments for their

network. The cartoons were completed in five weeks. The Family

Learning Channel rejected all of them upon review, and they were

never aired..."

Don Hertzfeldt, animator created the film "Rejected" in 2000 and still today

there are myths to whether it is real or not but when premiered on US TV it was

actually pulled and truly rejected. A rather dark comical piss take of corporate

advertising, a lot of which, will simply not be understood. But things to point

out are;

1. This whole film was made without Computers.

2. The ending is unbelievable.

Brooklyn Bridge Installation : Literature versus Traffic

800 illuminated books were installed under the Brooklyn Bridge, New York.
Armed with the intention that literature should seize the streets and overtake
public spaces, Spanish designers luzinterruptus randomly placed these literary
objects in such a way so that people were able to walk among them easily,
stop to look at them and even read them.

Studio Birch

Birch is a design studio comprised of two guys I used to spend rather

alot of time with down in the letterpress workshop at University. James

Allen and Elliot Hammer graduated with myself from LCC in 2009.

One of their first successful projects was in the group of six designers

from LCC who designed our Degree Show catalogue and now since

forming Birch between them they haven't looked back.

Combining projects of print and websites with Letterpress and workshops

they are practicing in both old and new styles. A good bit of printing

Fly with Black Crows

I'm absolutely obsessed when it comes to flying down mountains packed

with snow and obviously you're thriving off the adrenaline and memories

for months after a sweet trip to the higher places of the world. Also I'm not

sure if you've been around for the last two weeks but any snow junkie would

have at somepoint been glued to a TV set for some Vancouver olympics.

Ski Cross a particular favourite of mine this year.

So I've been looking at things ski related that I can't afford and although

I really would like some Ski's. I'm from Britain and I work so I don't qualify

for enough skiing in my opinion to own my own (so I bought some sick

Dragons instead) but Black Crows have a sick range, oh and on the Design

side I think they know what they're doing, don't you? Check them out,

I'm as into football as other sports, but I am sporty and I do love watching Arsenal

as everyone does with their disregard of what else is going on in football, Wenger

just gets on with nurturing talent into free flowing football the very essence of 'the

beautiful game'. But I saw this in the Metro on the way home from work and it just

made me smile. It shows that Wenger's Arsenal stars aren't just a class above on the

field but also off it with the ability to create awareness for a good cause, whilst at

the same time taking the piss out of themselves.

Alex Steinweiss is the guy credited with the first designed Album Covers in 1939 and alot has

changed since then but not the power and energy of a well done album cover.

Through the social networking site Facebook you always get pointless chain messages (you all

know what I mean) and it grinds my gears. But there is one purley random creative virus around

Facebook now has a dedicated blog anonymously exhibiting peoples creations.

The Steinweiss Effect is the online gallery of Fake Album Covers created by anyone who knows

the rules and where to go.

They are created by designers, non designers, young and old using programs from Adobe CS to

some desktop Publishing junk probably. But people would agree that assuming people don't pick

and choose the results of the random some covers can be amazing! Get involved and submit your

creations to The Steinweiss Effect.

The Rules.

Thomas Høedholt // Defining Form

Thomas is a graphic designer whose photographic journal I stumbled across whilst

researching Indexhibit. Defining Form is a 'Visual Notepad' consisting of some amazing

photography, some persona and some not but all very atmospheric and beautiful. The

Michael is a art director, designer, illustrator based in New York

but also works from and for companies in Chicago. He has a client

list of big corporations in America and his website is only what I can

describe as classy city american.

But Michael's work although mostly corporate and in a similar style

to his site, design is cleverly inventive when Michael seems to have

more creative control. I have tried to make my point with the examples

above.

I think a grasp of your own creativity is essential if your a financially

secure designer, otherwise you just become classed with those people

who make web banners and promotional CD-Roms.

Friends With You (FWY) is a creative group based in Miami. Whilst I was in a photography searching mode and had got hooked on these pictures to

do with air, I was calming down and then saw via fffound these big balloons on beaches ACE! I've explored the FWY crew and their approach to design and

creativity as a whole is awesome if not very much my style. And Experimental Events is now my favourite even if I am a printer... although they may combine well...

The idea of The International Centre for Design in Saint-Etienne is that your not meant to think of the solar panels all over it as a means of clean energy but as a

useful aesthetic to the design. So now the money grabbing oil men can't make the argument that renewable energy means sacrificing looks, appeal and good

I had to put these up, As I found reading the Guardian website today it is Sesame Street's 40

Year Anniversary and the Guardian have approached it well I feel by putting up some classic

videos of famous guests to the show particularly featured with everyones favourite Elmo.

However Sesame Street themselves went big time and today the show will feature the First Lady,

Michelle Obama. All I hope is that Big Bird and Elmo got their background checks cleared else

Lance Armstrong has been the feature of a number new screenprinted

posters with an old school racing poster style (thinking of 60's 70's le

mans posters) however you can't get them without buying a £1000 plus,

bicycle so here are some for you to enjoy via just a screen.

2 amazing Graphic Design opportunities including the Chief Editor of Idea Magazine who spoke to us

for two hours about his thoughts inspirations and favourite issues as well as showing us Idea Magazine

issue 1 and asking us about our inspirations and influences.And secondly a couple of hours with one of

Japans biggest international recognised Designers, Hideki Nakajima who provided an insight into thought

processes in Design from Japan and working successfully doing what you want to do.

Whilst in Tokyo we had the pleasure to see the big derby in Baseball (Man Utd vs Man City) With the Tokyo GIANTS playing the Osaka TIGERS at

the incredible indoor arena of the Tokyo Dome, I bought a Giants Shirt. No' 6 Sakamoto and 3 and a half hours later I was very drunk thanks to the on

hand beer girls with backpacks of beer, Sakamoto had an awful game and the Giants lost but three days later they won the league and the whole experience was amazing.

Koyasan is considered one of the most Buddhist places in Japan and it is the home of the University teaching Buddhism, it is a mountain an hours

train ride out from where we were staying in Osaka and is also the university that our friends mother attends her MA in Buddhism We obviously decided

to go for a day and the mass grave yard full of pilgrims and even tour groups wasn't what we were expecting but it was still a very sombre and

beautiful place up in the mountains and screened off by high temperate forest there was constantly thousands of years of heritage all around you.

Around once every 50 years, so we were told this temple in Kyoto opens for a month after 9pm so you can pray to the powerful Buddha and walk the

grounds of the temple including the magnificently lit Bamboo grove at the back this was an unbelievable experience and there was something truly

spiritual about the place however un-religious you may be. The way they lit the gardens was awesome too.

The Old Capital is steeped in tradition and that is exactly why we wanted to go there so apart from the awesome train station you rock upto we went hiking on the hottest day

we were in Japan all around the temples the touristy ones and the tucked away ones I don't think I've walked as much in a city as I did there. It was amazing.

Japan 09// Osaka

We travelled by night bus for 7 hours to stay for a few days in Osaka with a friends family. We were living in what could only be described as a scene from Shenmue the classic Dreamcast game with little alleys

and winding roads up steep hills and over rivers on thin bridges. Although Osaka itself was a big city environment we were far enough out to experience some real day to day Japanese culture. One day whilst

walking in downtown Osaka we came across a public art installation where you drew whatever you wanted on strips of jeans and then tied your masterpieces to a tree, nothing symbolic to the western eye but

5 westerners taking an interested did seem to get us noticed especially when your 6ft plus.

Since Tokyo is so huge, and it consists of a sometimes harmonious mix of old and new. We were lucky to experience the truly Japanese side of

Tokyo and Japan starting with a traditional local festival in the shade of the buddhist temple we watched a junior Kendo competition and later

on witnessed crazy lantern bearers in a traditional parade in Shibuya for the Olympic Games bid.

The capital where we stayed for about 2 weeks and saw hardly half of this amazing place. I am so glad we knew and were with Japanese people it meant we had

an insiders guide appreciating a lot more than if we were just tourists fumbling around. And even better we weren't living in central Tokyo as we got a glimpse and

experience of living amongst the everyday families living in this vast city.

This is the stupid thing, 3 weeks after Norway I left with 5 of my closest buddies from college (2 of which were Japanese) to spend three weeks with them and their family

and friends. Spread across Osaka, Kyoto, Tokyo of course and some little gems of the area of those 3 cities for 3 weeks. I am now back in London as the cold sets in the

nights get earlier and the depression of not being back in the East is not far from my thoughts.

This is in the same class as Sydney, the Opera House is located in the rapidly expanding and modernising Oslo waterfront and apart from being

made out of white Marble, having an amazing simple yet extravagant inside and being able to walk all over it, the whole place is an Island.

Away from the beauty and Natural coasts almost untouched by the modern world we travelled north

to Oslo the Norway capital to be confronted with beauty in the city a chilled polite respectful city with

the most greenery I think I have ever witnessed urbanly.

From finishing and graduating from London College

of Communication we found ourselves with a period

known to many as the Summer Holidays with a lot

of work to do, but this time it's to survive.

The Three of us are now not a united force under the

same roof but now out among you probably thinking

allowed too much and still making random lists that

we know you all would think long and hard over too.

The School of Graphic Design at the London College of Communication is known throughout the world as a design school of innovation and experimentation with a strong emphasis on research and process. It was ranked 9th globally by BusinessWeek in an article 'The Best Design Schools in the world' in 2007. BA Graphic and Media Design course at The London College of Communication, part of the University of the Arts, is one of the most sought after universities to study at in UK, attracting international students from all over the world. Herbert Spencer, Anthony Froshaug, Derek Birdsall, Harry Beck, Ken Briggs, Alan Fletcher, Ken Garland, Weingart, Erik Spiekermann, Neville Brody, Tom Eckersley and Robert Brownjohn have all either studied at the School or have taught or lectured.

This year, 200 graduates are exhibiting their work in the 5:1 show, which opens on June 26th and closes on July 3rd. It features the 5 distinct specialist pathways which make the course so unique: five specialisms united in the one discipline of graphic design. Pathways that make up the BA Graphic and Media Design course are Typo/graphics, Illustration, Information Design, Design for Advertising and Interactive/Moving Image.

The exhibition will include projects from the final year students who are graduating this summer, together with examples of dissertations and graduation reports written by the graduates. This degree show is guaranteed to inspire, surprise and amaze even the most seasoned design enthusiasts. A whole range of innovative work in different mediums which pushes the boundaries of design and explores a wide range of visual communication possibilities.
